I. INTRODUCTION
A. The threefold challenge:
1. The Church is going "gray"
2. Our "Strong Men" have been tied up
3. This leads to a lack of "dreams and
visions" and subsequently, vital. Kingdom-building ministry
B. The Urgency and Insight of Scripture*: (2)
1. Matthew 12:29 "Or again, how can anyone
enter a strong man's house and carry off
his possessions unless he first ties up the strong
man? Then he can rob his house."
2. Mark 3:27 "In fact, no one can enter a
strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man.
Then he can rob his house."
3. Luke 11:21 "When a strong man, fully
armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe."
4. John 11:44 "The dead man came out, his
hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to
them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."
5. 2 Samuel 23 "These arc the names of
David's mighty men...." 6.1 Chronicles 11:10 "These were me chiefs of David's
mighty menthey, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend
it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised."
7. Ephesians4:ll-13 "It was he who gave some
to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and
teachers, to prepare God's people for works of Service, so that the body of Christ may be
built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and
become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
II. IDENTIFYING THOSE THINGS WHICH BIND
OUR STRONG MEN
A. The seduction of American men...
B. Financial, sexual, career idolatry, idolatry in
general, apathy, etc.
C. Spiritual, emotional, demonic forces (including
denominationalism)
D. Parable of the Lifesaving Station
Our Mission "...to win as many as
possible." I Corinthians 9:19
III. THE MINISTRY OF UNWRAPPING PEOPLE
A. John 11: The raising of Lazarus
B. Spending time with Jesus before doing things
for Jesus
C. "This one thing I do..."
IV. TOWARD THE KINGDOM: THE POWER, PLAN
AND PROMISE OF CHRIST'S MIGHTY MEN
A. Three pivotal characters:
1. David: Building the Kingdom with five smooth
stones
a. An unswerving devotion to God b. An
unquenchable availability
c. An unashamed dependence upon God
d- An undying love for God's people
e. An unquestioned commitment to God's Kingdom
2. Jesus: Building a bridge between God and man
a. A bridge over ignorance: "He who does not
love remains in death."
b. A bridge over prejudice: "They don't even
believe in Jesusbut I do!"
c. A bridge over sin
3. Paul: Building fee Church of Jesus Christ
a. Prayer
b. Knowledge and insight which leads to
discernment
c. Purity and blamelessness (making the Church
worth coming back for)
d. Fruit of righteousness (Fellowship) B. Trying
to restrain fanatics is a lot more fun than resurrecting corpses! C. To upset the
equilibrium...It takes the Holy Spirit! D. Three kinds of sight are required to restore
and foster vision:
1. Hindsight, which gives wisdom;
2. Foresight, which gives hope;
3. Insight, which gives that which is necessary in
order to take the next step, right now!
V. SO WHAT? ONCE UNTIED, WHAT DO CHRIST'S
MIGHTY MEN DO? WHAT IS THEIR NEWLY EMBRACED ROLE?
A. Ephesians 4:11-13
1. Apostles
2. Prophets
3. Evangelists
4. Pastors
5. Teachers
6. Those who prepare others through discipleship
7. "This one thing I do..."
8. Appropriation of the Office of Deacon,
"Servant Ministry
B. "Success in ministry is measured in
changed lives, not in numbers of people and budget
dollars and fancy buildings. All those things may
come and go, but lives changed for
Christ are forever." (Carolyn Weese, Eagles In Tall Steeples).
C. The self-forgetfulness of concentrated attention...breaking down denominational walls (The list of Mighty Men in 2 Samuel and 1 Chronicles indicates that very few of the members were from the same village. In fact, David brought the best, strongest, most loyal from all around the kingdom.) D. "Little pencils in the hand of God..." -E. David's Mighty Men had one purpose and that was to serve the king. Christ's Mighty Men are charged with the task and privilege of serving The King.
